Nicole Gill My name is Nicole Gill and I have just launched my lingerie and corset business. My collection was first featured at Alternative Fashion Week 2010, since then I have expanded my collection and introduced my new online boutique.

What inspired you to become a lingerie designer?
I began studying Fashion and Contour design at De Montfort university in 2006; specialising in bridal wear, bras and basques. For my final collection I chose to throw myself into lingerie and I became really passionate about designing these pieces. After graduating in 2009, I knew that now was the best time to set up my own business. I wanted to do my own thing and bring my own vision to life.

What makes your designs different from others?
My designs are based upon vintage styles and silhouettes. I use a muted palette of pink and ivory with contrasting charcoals and black. All my garments are made out of luxurious, high quality fabrics.

Are there any celebrities wearing your designs and who are they?
Not at the minute, but I have high hopes for the near future!

Do you wear your own products?
I wear the bra and knicker sets, I like to get a feel of my products so I know exactly what I am selling. I like to know that my garments are of the highest standard and I must be aware that they not only look good, but they are comfortable and wearable.

What’s your favourite lingerie brand (not your own!) and why?
I love Ell and Cee; I think their style is beautiful! Their garments are soft and elegant.

Do you think there’s enough choice for D+ sizes?
I think that there is a limited amount of styles available for D+ sizes. I hope to eventually extend my range to larger sizes.

Are you happy with the way lingerie is sized? If not what changes would you like to see?
I feel that the sizing system works well, everyone is familiar with it.

What advice would to give to an aspiring lingerie/swimwear designer?
A lot of research is necessary! Become familiar with your market, you have to know who your products are aimed at and you must be passionate about what it is you are creating. Be patient, opportunities will come along!

How do you get your inspirations for new collections?
I find inspiration in a vast range of things; however my new collection is based upon the original and classic tea-party in Wonderland. The collection includes tight-laced corsets, vintage style briefs, unique bralette’s and feminine nightwear pieces. The designs feature chiffon ruffles, steel bones and delicate bows. I took inspiration from the tea-party scene because I have always loved the stories of Alice’s adventures; I wanted to create a cute yet vintage collection.

Do you use paper and pencil to design your first draft or is it all done on computer?
I always use paper and pencil. That way I can get out as many designs as I want. Once I have come up with my final designs, I present them on the computer.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer?
I would probably be a primary school teacher!

What are you working on right now?
Marketing my website launch.

What makes a great lingerie model?
A curvy figure, I’m not a fan of stick thin models. My sister actually does all of my modelling, so I’m very lucky!
