What Makes A Great Lingerie Model

March 3, 2009 | 10 Comments More

What Makes A Great Lingerie Model Modelling lingerie is one of the hardest assignments a new or experienced model can have. You stand around wearing next to nothing trying to look gorgeous with designers and photographers poking and prodding, its probably cold or even worse – outside and raining!

Making lingerie look good is no easy task – you need to be able to wear many different styles of bras and knickers, you need a bust and a bottom but you also need to be super toned, flat tummy and be able to look sexy when your not really feeling sexy at all!

We’ve asked some of the biggest names in UK lingerie what they think makes a great lingerie model, read what they say and maybe give it a try yourself!!

Michelle Mone - Ultimo Ultimo
Michelle Mone, creator of Ultimo, said; “First and foremost, a great lingerie model has to have a fantastic body. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean skinny is best. In fact, if you take a look at Ultimo’s campaigns over the years, we represent all shapes and sizes and always feature models with fabulous curves, which I think is incredibly important. Personality is a major aspect too and I’ll always make a point of going out for dinner with whoever we’re considering for our next campaign, to make sure they’re right for the job!

“A great lingerie model also has to have excellent presence in front of the camera and bags of body confidence. Stripping down to lingerie isn’t always easy, so it’s essential that any lingerie model feels comfortable in her own skin and can really showcase the lingerie with elegance and poise.”

Ultimo A-D & Ultimo D-G is available from Debenhams stores nationwide and ultimo.co.uk

Ann Marie Manley - EvedenEveden
Ann-Marie Manley, Head of Marketing at Eveden looks after the brands Freya, Freya Active, Fantasie, Fauve, Elomi and Goddess.

Ann-Marie said “The perfect lingerie model has a distinctive character and personality who can reflect that in her work. Being specialists in fuller-cup sized lingerie means that we require a model to match these criteria and will only use models that have natural breasts. We also make a conscious effort to not cast any models that are too slim as we do not want to be considered to be a bad influence to girls and women alike in promoting the attitude that size 0 is healthy.”

Andrea Billard Andrea Billard
Andrea who designs the self-named brand said “What makes a great lingerie model? In my opinion, a lingerie model has to be made of ‘strong stuff’ – in some respects they have a tougher day at the office compared to fashion models. How would we like to spend all day wearing, in some cases, nothing more than tiny pieces of fabric covering our modesty – I certainly wouldn’t! And when they are cold, we ask them to look ‘hot’! We expect them to have great self esteem and body image and to never have ‘off’ days – we push them for them to create the perfect image for our brand, whilst maybe not always giving them the credit they deserve.”

“I have recently been blessed with working with a great model called Katie Atkinson. She has all the physical attributes a brand looks for to show their collections to the fullest and in the best light but just as importantly, she has a fantastic attitude. There have been instances in the past when a model hasn’t been willing to do the basics; mid shoot, she decided to say she wouldn’t have shots taken from the back – and from a brands point of view that’s disastrous, especially when you have detail you want to show on the back. However, Katie was great, very professional, never complained and did everything we asked of her despite it being a freezing day in December! And she still managed to look hot! I used a very experienced photographer and make up artist and they both couldn’t compliment Katie enough about her attitude and staying power on what turned out to be a long day!”

Actually the best remedy is either pure natural shea butter (which you can get from L’Occitane) or palmer’s cocoa butter- i have been using shea butter for years now and my skin is soft! palmer’s cocoa butter darkens your skin and helps it burn easily in the summer but it MUST not be used an a tanning cream- if you go to Ghana, you will see people have very dark but good skin as a result of using cocoa butter.

I think a good body is essential for a Lingerie model but I also think that Lingerie companies should advertise different shaped models to promote a larger range of sizes.

I agree with comment about larger ladies modelling for larger sizes. Still I suppose there must have been those that tried to advertise with larger ladies and did not get the sales volume.
Wonder how many larger ladies have been dissapointed when they have bought lingerie to find it does not look good on them?

I agree with the two posters above. Lingerie looks totally different in a photo modelled by a thin model than when you get it home. I wouldn’t call myself a large lady, but it still never looks the same.

Lots of lingerie companies go up to plus size ranges these days, so like barnschop says – how many are disappointed when they receive their item?

Everytime I buy underwear it makes me feel great until I see the mirror. Perhaps its the feeling thats more important than how you look?

Personally, I have a small body and large breasts. I hate it when I see bras (that cover sizes B-G) being modelled only on the smaller breasted models. I refuse to buy bras that are displayed like that because I know that when I get it home the style and materials will be completely different. Larger cup sizes require stronger materials and a completely lacy bra for a B cup will be made with different materials for a G cup, so both styles should be modelled for all customers.

  • Simply Yours Team

At Simply Yours we specialise in larger size lingerie – with bras up to JJ cups and selected styles in K and L, so we think it’s very important to use curvier models. To emphasise this we recently did a series of interviews with our gorgeous plus size model Erika Elfwencrona about her experiences of the plus size modelelling industry – you can see the videos on our YouTube channel – take a look and say hello!
