Céline Bakshi from Petits SecretsI am Céline Bakshi and I started Petits Secrets by CB in the Summer of 2011. I am the sole designer behind the brand and currently make everything by hand, myself. I started Petits Secrets as a side project to my freelance footwear design work, but when I saw that people like my concept and the product, I realised this was something I could take more seriously!

What inspired you to become a lingerie designer?
I am actually a trained footwear designer and this is what I studied and have always known. However, I started to have periods where I did not have a huge amount of work on so I wanted something to fill my time. Having always had a keen interest and love of lingerie, I started to teach myself what to do. After some playing around and testing and mock – ups, I showed some friends what I and been doing and they instantly loved it and wanted to buy them. So I took it from there and now, here I am!

What makes your designs different from others?
I think the most unique thing about my designs is exactly that – every item is completely unique. I make my pieces from unwanted clothing which means I only have a limited amount of each fabric, thus making each item a complete one off. This use of fabric also means that the pieces are eco-friendly, which I think helps to set them apart from other designs out there today. The designs themselves are very fun, flirty and girlie which I hope makes the wearer feel the same way.

Are there any celebrities wearing your designs and who are they?
Not yet! Hopefully one day there will be though!

Do you wear your own products?
Of course, why wouldn’t I!

What’s your favourite lingerie brand (not your own!) and why?
I adore Myla. They always have such unique designs and they are always so beautiful. The materials used and colour palettes are super sexy and luxurious.

Do you think there’s enough choice for D+ sizes?
I think the biggest thing missing for D+ sizes is pretty and luxurious styles that will make the wearer feel as a woman should when she wears beautiful lingerie.

Are you happy with the way lingerie is sized? If not what changes would you like to see?
The way that lingerie is sized has always suited me and I can’t say I have ever had any problems with it. I know there is some dispute nowadays as to whether the current sizing system works, but truthfully, for me, it does.

What advice would to give to an aspiring lingerie/swimwear designer?
I would say, just don’t hold back and let your creativity take control. Don’t be afraid of experimenting with new ideas as unique designs and ideas will be a huge asset to your collections.

How do you get your inspirations for new collections?
My biggest inspirations come from things I have seen. I am always inspired by things around me and my experiences. Anything from an art exhibition, travelling or a friend or stranger can influence my creativity.

Do you use paper and pencil to design your first draft or is it all done on computer?
With anything I design, I always draw by hand first. I can be much more artistic and don’t feel restricted when I put pen to paper.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer?
That is a very good question. I have always been artistic so it would have to be something creative. If I didn’t go into the design/fashion industry, I probably would have gone down the photography road.

What are you working on right now?
I am always working on new pieces given that my fabrics come from all over, and I can come across a new unwanted garment at any time. But right now I am working on some items to raise money for Cancer Recovery. Esty Lingerie have teamed up with Cancer Recovery for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, and I have volunteered to make and donate pieces to auction off.

What makes a great lingerie model?
The biggest and by far the most important thing is confidence. Size and natural beauty means nothing when modelling lingerie if you do not have the confidence to pull it off and convince the viewer that you love how you feel in what you are wearing – even though what you are wearing, is not very much at all!

Petits Secrets is available to buy online at Esty.
