I am Myriam Girard, owner and designer of “Myriam Girard, lingerie fine”. I started the company in London last year but my influences come from my French background and culture.
What inspired you to become a lingerie designer?
I have always loved the luxury of French lace and silks. I wanted to design a collection that made women feel beautiful and glamorous.
What makes your designs different from others?
My pieces look great on different body shapes and sizes from size 4 to 14, from AA cup to F cup. The secret is the cut – very feminine and flattering – and the use of 100% silk. I realised that with quality materials (100% silk not only looks glamorous but creates a much more flattering silhouette) and cuts all women can look and feel beautiful.
Are there any celebrities wearing your designs and who are they?
I had my first celebrity client this month, but unfortunately I can not mention her name yet! I am very happy she chose my brand and hope there will be many more celebrity clients to come.
Do you wear your own products?
Of course. They are designed to be comfortable as well as beautiful.
What’s your favourite lingerie brand (not your own!) and why?
Christian Dior Lingerie. A classic piece of French Lingerie always makes a woman look exquisite!
Do you think there’s enough choice for D+ sizes?
I think more brands are targeting the D+ sizes market for bras so choice is much better than it has been, but there hasn’t been enough in nightwear and loungewear.
Are you happy with the way lingerie is sized? If not what changes would you like to see?
I think it has improved a lot and sizes have become harmonised across countries which makes it easier to buy online.
What advice would you give to an aspiring lingerie/swimwear designer?
Know who you are designing for is essential. Do your research, see what other brands are doing and find a way to make your product stand out from the crowd.
How do you get your inspirations for new collections?
I start working on colours, I get inspiration from nature, I love spring for the amazing shades of colours flowers can offer. I also love the glamour of the 1940s and old Hollywood and obviously women and their beautiful bodies and shapes!
For the design, I have many source of inspirations from the art world: paintings from 18th & 19th century, art nouveau and arts decoratifs, French history, etc
Do you use paper and pencil to design your first draft or is it all done on computer?
I always keep a little drawing book and pencil in my bag, especially when I travel. So first drafts are always done with pen and papers.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer?
I worked in many different fields: marketing, PR of Chinawhite, banking, etc….but becoming a designer and having my own brand is what I always dreamt of so I wouldn’t think of doing anything else!
What are you working on right now?
Spring Summer 2011. The collection is looking great already and I have chosen beautiful laces.
What makes a great lingerie model?
A firm and curvy body with a beautiful smile!
